The collection contains the business records of various companies related to W. Cuninghame and Co. The records of the parent firm include a power of attorney (1753) and account (1753-1756) for the estate of Thomas McCredie; correspondence (1775) concerning the purchase of tobacco; accounts (1763-1799) and bonds (1774-1775) concerning a store kept in Falmouth, Va.; judgments (1754-1771), letters (1764-1766), order (1772), and bond (1766) concerning the company. There are also the papers of James Robison, a factor in Falmouth, for the company: letters received (1772-1776), some concerning construction of a ship; and accounts (1768-1775). For Walter Colquhoun, a factor in Falmouth, for the company: letters received (1796-1798), accounts (1796-1802), bond (1797), and bill of exchange (1796). Andrew Cochrane kept a store (Cochrane, Cuninghame and Company) in Falmouth: accounts (1765-1769), bonds (1764-1768), judgment (1772); as Cochrane and Company: accounts (1766-1775), judgments (1756-1773), and order (1765) to satisfy a judgment; as Cochrane, Dreghorn and Company: bonds (1763-1766), judgments (1763-1766), and order (1765) to satisfy a judgment. For the firm Eade, Willson and Allen of New York: letters (1780) and account (1779-1781) concerning the sale of cannons to the British Army and Navy. The collection also includes Porter family land records for Spotsylvania County, Va.: deeds (1780-1818, 1835), deposition and plat (1841), list of acreage owned (1797-1840), and letter (1831); Thomas Minor estate papers (1840, 1843). Also includes miscellaneous accounts (1768- 1851), and a Purks and Company of King and Queen County, Va., bond (1827). There is also a list, ca. 1863, of hospitals of the U.S. Army of the Potomac, 9th Corps, in Fredericksburg, Va. during the Civil War.
